Greetings all:

Happy Canada Day to all of my Canadian friends in the Kiwanis family and I hope that everyone in the States has a very safe and healthy 4th of July Celebration this upcoming weekend!

I've been super busy lately traveling during this summer service season. I was fortunate enough to spend a great weekend in Pittsburgh for the Pennsylvania District Summer Board Meeting, travel down to the sweet south to Nashville for the Kiwanis International Convention, and now I find myself packing my bags to Dallas, Texas for the Key Club International Convention. Yeehaaaw!

When I return I'll have full write-ups for everyone on Pittsburgh, Nashville, and Dallas to share as well as a few fun photos to attach along.

Thank you to the hundreds of people who read this blog every month and to all the Kiwanis family members making the commitment to serve this summer :)

Volunteering is SEXY

Do you want to be happier, more successful, have more friends, and a loving partner? Now these are the kinds of promises that many self-help gurus make millions out of. In fact if I charged you a lot of money and gave you this promise you'd more than likely pay. However, there is a way to get all of these results, it's SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN (yes really) and it's FREE. What's the answer - you ask? Volunteering I say.

The scientific findings of volunteering and positive psychology show that:

Giving (not taking) makes us happier
Volunteering can increase life satisfaction and self esteem
Volunteering facilitates meeting others, connecting with others and making friends
People who volunteer are seen as more attractive to the opposite sex
People who volunteer are seen as cooler than those who don't volunteer

There is a wealth of research that demonstrates endless psychological and sociological benefits of volunteering.

Why then don't more people volunteer? To the ill informed volunteering is seen as dowdy. It has an image problem. Volunteer groups (with the exception of a few) have done a very poor job of making themselves look sexy - and it is. There is research to back up the claim that people who volunteer are more attractive to the opposite sex than is say having a cool car, or talking about your bulging pay pack. Basically, if you want to be happier, be in a relationship, have better self-esteem.... and so on - volunteer.

The other reason people don't volunteer so much is that it is a hassle. Who do I call? Where do I go? How can I find a place close to where I live? How can I find something I'm interested in to volunteer? To not make to fine a point about it - most of these barriers are addressed through SEEK Volunteer, a centralised database of all the volunteer jobs available in Australia (and a lovely client of Naked's).

So what needs to happen for more people to volunteer?

Volunteer organisations need to re-brand themselves and strip away their dowdy image - you can make yourselves better.
People need to be aware of the benefits, and believe they are real.

Hey there CKI!

So now that final exams are FINALLY over I can sit down and write you a thorough update on what's shaken in the life of your IP.

Fell in love - Absolutely! So since the last time I wrote I have completely fallen in love (again) with the Special Olympics organization. If your club hasn't had the opportunity to work with them in the past you should definitely check out their web-site for more information on how to get involved. They are some of the sweetest and most caring individuals I've ever had the pleasure to meet and the events at the Special Olympics are a blast! You can do everything from face painting, scoring the games, or assisting the athletes. To look at some pictures from my Special Olympics event go ahead and up to the top!
Read a Book or 2 - Since finals have been over I have been able to lay in my backyard and catch up on some reading. I finished Secret Diary of a Call Girl which has now been made into a ShowTime TV show, kinda cool. I really recommend it as a good summer read in case anyone is looking for one. Also, yesterday I was laying on a blanket in my yard trying to read The Curious Case of Benjamin Button since I've seen the movie but I always think books are better. Well, I had to take a quick phone call on my cell phone inside (okay I lied it was like a 40 minute phone call..haha) and came back to have the pages ALL OVER my YARD! My puppy Buster had torn apart book! Apparently, I am a mother of a very anti-literacy dog or he was hungry or something because the pages were EVERYWHERE! I'll have to go to the Book Store this weekend and get a new copy since my fiesty little puppy went crazy on me.
Service! Yes, I am so excited. This upcoming Saturday I organized a city-wide clean up for my hometown of Ogdensburg, N.Y. My co-chair Nick Vaugh, he's a City Councilor *oh la la!* has been absolutley fantastic and we have contacted everyone and their neighbor to come out and pitch in. It looks like the weather is going to hold up for us which is pretty sweet. Also, on Saturday I am chaperoning a Key Club Dodgeball Tournament and then working a Key Club Talent Show on June 3rd. So, essentially a Kiwanis Family summer. I love it!
Blogging - So, besides blogging on here I also write on Blogging for Babies. I was appointed last month to be a Collegiate Council Ambassador for the March of Dimes. Pretty sweet, right? In a nut shell, because I love babies I get to help out people who love babies to by encouraging campuses to get involved with the March of Dimes. I love it! So, if you get a moment check out my March of Dimes blog. Every comment is a chance to win a purple Dell wireless Computer Mouse. Wahoo go free stuff!
CKI - Saved the best for last! Muahha! In addition to serving as your International President for the year I'm really proud to be the International liaison to the LSSP Committee. They have been super hard at work at figuring out logistics, meals, amazing service projects, fellowship day, t-shirt colors, and much more. They are one hard bunch of workers and Chair Lukas and Vice Chair Heather are fantastic as well. Also, an update will be going out shortly about the results of the April Board Meeting. The minutes are being approved (it took a little bit longer then expected because iBoard members have final exams to study for too!) but none-the-less you'll be getting a full update in your inbox pretty soon. And we can't wait to tell you about all the rockin' stuff we did!

Hi Everyone-

I figured I would stop in and say "Hellloooo!" since I am in need of a study break! Congratulations to those of you who have finished your semester or are on your way/have graduated. I'm still in school for the next week doing final exams, final portfolios, and final papers for my six courses.

However, I am excited that next semester will be my second to last and I will finally be a senior, woot!

Frustration & Faith in New York City

Hey CKI!

I hope everyone had a great Kiwanis One Day, Passover, Easter, and any other holidays that have been occurring lately. Last weekend I traveled to Indianapolis to attend the Governor's & Administrator's Training Conference (GATC) with VP Ricardo and the great leaders of our organization. The weekend was a complete blast and I am so proud of all of the leaders that each district has elected to serve as their Governor this upcoming year - everyone is going to do such a great job!

So, if you know me you know that while I do fly often I run into troubles anytime I fly through LaGuardia airport in NYC. My travels on my way to GATC proved this theory correct! I was scheduled to leave Syracuse at 11:45am and after a 2 hours delay I finally left and landed in LaGuardia with only 30 minutes left to make my connection to Indianaoplis I really thought I wouldn't make it. Let me tell you I was wrong! After my flight failed to make it's 2:25pm departure the take-off time kept getting pushed up hour after hour after hour. Finally my fellow passengers and I found out we wouldn't be leaving NYC for Indianapolis until 7:30pm. As you can imagine I originally set out my day thinking I would land in Indianapolis at 4:45pm and now wouldn't be leaving until almost 3 hours after that I was a bit frustrated, cranky, and tired. I called our CKI Director Erin Fischer and told her "I am not a happy camper!" and some how her calming voice made me feel better.

So why am I blogging about annoying and nagging travel arrangements? I may not have landed in Indianapolis until 12:00am but I was reaffirmed a very important life lesson in NYC's LaGuardia airport and that is that there is a silver lining to every cloud. While waiting on my 5 hour delay I had the opportunity to meet 2 of the sweetest children I've ever met.

The first kid I met was named Danny and he was a 6 year old African-American boy traveling home with his dad after having surgery. He was in a wheel chair and had a hard time speaking. The reason why he had surgery his father told me was because he was terribley burned in a house fire last year. He wore a helmet, mask on his face, and had a prosthetic leg but he also had a beautiful smile. Danny and his dad sat next to me at Gate 2 and his wheel chair was parked right next to my seat at the end. His dad set up a coloring book and crayons on his lap and when I setting down my book Danny looked at me and asked if I would color with him. I looked at his dad with a chuckling smile and his dad handed me a coloring book and crayons as well. Danny and I must have sat there for 45 minutes comparing pictures, colors, and drawings and while I was getting my art skills on with this sweet boy I couldn't help but think of how amazing the concept of the innocence of children is. I think this is why Kiwanis is so important. I always have loved the Kiwanis motto of "Serving the Children of the World" but it really is ridiculously beautiful if you think about it. All around the world children are suffering from things like disease, hunger, neglect, and to know that as Kiwanians and as a Kiwanis Family we can make a difference and make the world a better place is an amazing thing. No, I didn't count my art project time with Danny as service hours but I wish he had a monthly report form to fill out. If he did he could list 45 hours of service to me because this little boy showed me that no matter how bad your circumstances are there is always time to make a new friend and there always time for crayons. :)

The second little girl I met couldn't have been more then 4 years old. I met her in the bathroom when she was trying to reach for the sink to wash her hands and couldn't climb or jump to get to the sink. I put my bags down and looked around to see if any parent, grandparent, or family member was with her but afer a really long wait realized she was all alone. Now don't get me wrong I don't go around lifting little children to reach sinks but this little child started to cry. I first had a lot of fury inside of me just thinking about the concept that a parent would let their 4 year old kid go to the bathroom in an airport alone but secondly wanted to help if I could. I crouched over and asked if she was by herself and after shaking her head yes she began to cry and repeated "I can't reach! I can't reach!" I lifted her up so that she could wash her hands and then after leaving the bathroom she realized she didn't know which gate her mom was sitting at. She grabbed my hand and started to essentially take off running. For a moment I was super nervous that someone (possibly her mother) would see us together and think I was trying to kidnap her kid. After she roamed around and couldn't find her mom she started to cry again. I took the girl to a US Airways agent who made an announcement for her parents to meet her at the gate. Come to find out her mom and sister were sitting up at the foodcourt located on the other side of the airport. I couldn't believe this kid had traveled this far! All that mattered at the end of the day was that she found her mom and I was happy to help by being dragged along by her. About 20 minutes later I'm sitting at home sweet home Gate 2 again and I have a half of a piece of an oatmeal raisin cookie thrown at my face and falls in my lap. Truthfully, I was like "what the heck!?" I looked up and it was the same girl I just helped (I wish I could remember her name.) She walked by with her mom and spotted me and apparently took off running again and wanted to give me half of her cookie. I gave her a hug and said thank you very much and her mom thanked me for returning her child.

I apologize for this blog post being so long but I just had to tell you guys about these 2 really sweet kids. I learned from Danny that no matter how hard you think your life is there is always someone who has it worse and to be sure to stop and enjoy the little things in life such as coloring. I also learned from the girl I helped in the bathroom that kids are extraordinary and her compassion and gratitude by giving me half of a cookie was one of the sweetest sentiments ever. To top things off at Gate 2/3 in LaGuardia there is a huge advertisement for the March of Dimes. Apparently, fate put me at that gate and I like to think that fate was the reason why I learned faith in children and the future amidst frustration at the airport.

In closing, always remember that you're never too old to learn/re-learn a lesson and you're never too busy to make a difference in the life of a child.

Hey there CKI-

Whether you know this or not there are probably over a hundred Circle K'ers around the world right now waiting and counting down til their clocks hit 12:00am EST. Well, with that being said I know I will be one of those people and I am just as sad as I am excited.

April 1st, 2009 at 12:00am EST marks the brand new 2009-2010 service year and while I am absolutely ecstatic about the opportunity to meet with new bright and brilliant leaders this year I can't help but also be sad and say goodbye to the leadership team family I have known to grow and love this year as well. Thank you so much to every officer and member who helped your districts succeed. The year that we had would not have been as great without any single person missing from the equation and I am very proud to have been along for the ride as International Representative and to finish it off as President. I hope that every single person knows how thankful I am for the great things that they have done and I know will continue to do inside and outside CKI.

May your hearts always be warm 08-09 & gear up 09-10!

Hi to all my friends who attended the Member's Workshop this morning at NYCKI DCON 09!

By popular demand here are the directions for BooBoo Bunnies. I know you guys were interested in doing them for the service project at your club meetings and I hope you have a ton of fun!

Supplies:

googly eyes
pom poms (small and mini sized, small = tail, mini = nose)
rubber bands
glue (tacky glue works)
washcloths (square, can get like...an 18 pack at walmart or something)
thin colored ribbon

To make a booboo bunnie:

fold the washcloth in half diagonally
start rolling the washcloth from the shorter side (not where the fold is in the washcloth, but where the two points met, if that makes sense)-this will be the bunny's body
fold the cloth in half; the fold will now be the bunny's butt. secure with rubber band about halfway
fold the cloth in half again and secure about 1/3 way with the rubber band. cover the rubber band with a thin ribbon. this side will be the face. the excess towel part will be the ears, make them look like ears
glue on googly eyes and mini pom pom for the nose
voila! you're done and now have a beautiful Boo Boo Bunnie

There's no place like HOME!

Hey there CKI!

I arrived this morning with my District Treasurer Gabby to the New York District's District Convention. It was really great to be welcomed by my fantastic Assistant Administrators as well as the rockin' SUNY New Paltz CKI club and their great decorations. This year's convention is themed "Service: Gettin' jiggy with it!" It's pretty rockin because everywhere you are you can find pixie sticks, pokemon cards, Power Ranger action figures and much more. When I get home I will upload pictures of the cute table decorations varying from Salut your Shorts to Rugrats.

The clubs were the most enthusiastic I have ever seen them before and the dance was awesome with things like the alligator dance, cotton-eye joe, and karaoke.

Congrats to NY for having 21 clubs in attendance this year - that is quite the milestone!

Cal-Nev-Ha, Capital, and Pennsylvania: I hope you guys are having a blast at your DCON too! :)

Yo ho ho! Ahoy, mates!

I wanted to take a quick second to hop online and send you pirate love from the amazing Michigan District of Circle K! This evening and weekend have sure been a lot of fun and I am very blessed to have had the opportunity to spend this weekend in such remarkable company. I've always been impressed by the potential and sparks of enthusiasm that occur when people gather for one common purpose and this District Convention is no exception. This weekend through Penny Wars, Costume Contests, games of "Guess how much Booty is in the jar?" and other friendly competitions the clubs of Michigan have come together to raise money for the Six Cents Initiative. As soon as Governor Ashley gives me an update on the Penny Wars I will surely keep all of you posted with how much they raise. I always love it when I can visit some place and immediately feel welcomed as if I was at home. It was also great to see our CKI Director Erin Fischer visit to lead the Michigan District's advisors and Kiwanians in Advisor Leadership Bootcamp: Fischer Style! Thank you to the Michigan District for being such a "warm home feeling" place, attending my early 7:20 am Officer Workshop with the District Exec Board (remember, "I AM SO NOT TIRED!"), and participating in this DCON.

This evening continued with a Keynote Address from Jim Dreyer, a world class swimmer who has swam all 5 of the Great Lakes, a few tid-bits of motivation from moi, and well deserved awards. In addition, I also got to meet in person a huge group from the amazing CKI Club at the University of Michigan who is renowned for their 24 hours of Service and large dues-paid roster.

Prior to attending District Convention I only knew about the University of Michigan for 3 reasons. 1.) The school is mentioned in my all time favorite movie "The Break Up" 2.) I bought a U of M shirt one time at Steve & Barry's for the sole reason that I knew they had a Circle K Club, and 3.) meeting our fabulous IP Blood Drive Committee Chair Jenna Dahn at ICON last year. However, this evening I was able to witness first hand the true testament to the type of leadership they foster with their 163 member CKI Club. I say I got to witness this because at this evening's award ceremony the entire 2008-09 Leadership Team for U of Michigan CKI received Outstanding Officer Awards! Congratulations to U of Michigan for becoming such a well oiled service machine and to all of the clubs who won awards including Central Michigan for growth, Wayne State for Scrapbook, and Michigan State CKI for their distinguished officers.

The evening ended with a dance and you can bet that Editor Kristina Croes, myself, and Governor Ashley Malmsten did the Leadership Academy dance to "The Way I Are" in honor of our friends from Leadership Academy as well as the Alligator Dance (shorts and all!) dedicated to Sub-region C! ;) I promised the UMich CKI Club that I would wear my lovely UMich shirt and sing their fight song with them if they donated $6.00 to the Six Cents Initiative (I know, cheap but it's still a lot of lives) and returned the District gong. Although I will admit that I butchered it because I couldn't remember where I put down the lyrics I did however know the beginning line and the last one "the champions of the west!" It is my goal before International Convention to learn it in it's entirety so that I can sing along with them at the CKI Tailgate at our Birmingham International Convention.

Tomorrow morning the House of Delegates will reconveign at 7:00am and then I will be off to catch an early flight out and return back to Syracuse before the CKI Board meets for our evening bi-weekly phone conference.

Lastly, shout out to my fantastic roommates: Governor Ashley, 0910 Michigan State President Karen, and 0809 Michigan State President Kate for a great time guarding the gong, printing ridiculous amounts of paper, complaining about the lack of lighting, and overall just having a plain awesomely great time.

Weigh anchor and hoist the mizzen!

Hey all-

I hope everyone is making it through midterm season and has managed to take a break from working, volunteer, and spend some time with your club.

At my Circle K meeting last night we had our nominations for officers and I am ridiculously excited for what the year will bring next year and proud that I have one more year to dedicate to my club and CKI (woot go Class of 2010!). All the candidates who were nominated would do a phenomenal job in any office and I'm looking forward to another great SUNY Potsdam CKI E-Board.

The picture above is with Joe Swan (our FANTASTIC advisor), my Club President Lauren, Club Secretary Kari, Club Comptroller Liz, Club Treasurer Kari, and Club Editor Jen. I wanted to post it and congratulate them as well as the retiring 08-09 Club Exec Boards for working so hard all year to promote service, leadership, and fellowship. This thanks is also especially deserved to the advisors and Kiwanians who dedicate their time to helping our organization succeed. Truthfully, without my Kiwanis Advisor Joe or Faculty Advisor Karen I don't quite know how successful or how much service would get done.

With that being said, take the time at your next club meeting to hug your Kiwanians and thank them for all they do. I encourage all clubs to hold surprise Thank You parties for your advisors and honor them in any way you can through cards, awards, etc.

$400,000 Available for Service Projects!

Hi all-

The Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) Outstanding Commitments Awards are an opportunity for students to receive funding for innovative projects and initiatives (Commitments to Action).

We are very excited that CGIU has extended it's application for commitments to all Circle K Club Presidents to submit applications for consideration!

CGI U has partnered with Pat Tilman Foundation and the Wal-Mart Foundation to make available a total of $400,000 for 2009 student and student group commitments, across all five CGI U focus areas of education, energy and climate change, global health, peace and human rights, and poverty alleviation.

Applicants do NOT need to be CGI U attendees, and the application is open to all students (grad and undergrad.) If you are applying on behalf of a Circle K Club please submit the application in the name of a club officer.

The CGI U Outstanding Commitments Awards will provide recognition and financial support for a select number of CGI U commitments. To apply for the awards, students can fill out an Outstanding Commitment Award application here: http://www.clintonglobalinitiative.org/NETCOMMUNITY/Page.aspx?pid=3363&srcid=3364.

The deadline for the CGI U Outstanding Commitment Awards is Friday, April 3, 2009. Any questions about the application can be directed to cgiu.applicant@clintonglobalinitiative.org. Feel free to browse the CGI U website www.cgiu.org for ideas and examples of CGI U Commitments to Action.

Commitments to Action will be judged on the following criteria:

Replication: Can the project be replicated in different locations by new groups?

When I campaigned for President back in Denver last summer one of my big promises was that I wanted to put together a list of Spring Break schedule of projects clubs could attend if they wanted to visit other clubs during Spring Break. Now is the time to start thinking about what your club will be doing during the month of March.

If your club has any service projects planned any weekend in March/April please fill out the form below and e-mail it to president@circlek.org by February 28th at 12midnight. I will be compiling the list and posting it right here on my blog so that clubs/club officers can download the sheet and get in contact with your club if they would like to visit and help contribute to the project. Club Status, what in the world is that?!

Hey there CKI!

Clubs have recently been asking many questions about what their club status means on the Club Information Listing sent out every other week from Circle K International. In the past there were five club statuses based on dues. Now there are only four statuses, again based on dues:

→ Paid (club minimum dues in on time);
→ Suspended (no minimum by November 30);
→ Retained (paid for at least one member by September 30);
→ Inactive (No payment has been made by September 30).

There are three basic rules to the logic problem of club status and they are:
1. A club can move from “Suspended” to “Retained” with any payment.
2. A club can remain on “Retained” status indefinitely so long as any payment is made
3. A club can reactive its status (move from inactive to active) by paying dues for the minimum, submitting a corresponding roster, and paying a $100 reactivation fee.

All this means is that clubs only need to go through the hassle of “rechartering,” or, in this case, “activatization” if not a single person pays dues to all year long. Even if this were the case for a club, they would only need to pay $100 (along with dues) to get back on track.

Atlanta, Here I Come!

Just thought I'd stop by and say "Hello!" real quick before I board my flight tomorrow to go to beautiful Atlanta, Georgia. I'll be attending the 50th Annual Georgia District Convention and I couldn't be more excited. I haven't been to Atlanta since Key Club International Convention 2005 (back when I was NY Key Club Governor, shout out to NYDKC!) so I am very excited to see what the city of peaches, Coca-Cola, and the whole amazing state of Georgia has in store for me.

"On Sunday, March 1st, the Emmy^® Award-winning ABC-TV program Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, will build a new home for March of Dimes volunteers, the Augustin Family of Keller, Texas. The family was selected because Amber and Peter Augustin’s son, Lane, was born extremely premature in 2004. Hundreds of March of Dimes volunteers and staff helped demolish and rebuild the Augustins’ home, which was destroyed by flooding. International Gavel Returned!

I am writing happily to report to you that the Circle K International gavel has been graciously returned to the CKI office. We have certainly missed it since it came up missing after ICON in Denver but it was mailed a few weeks ago from the sunny state of Florida and is now home sweet home where it belongs in Indianapolis.

A huge shout out and thanks to Mr. Alex Garner for taking the time to mail it back to us so that it can be used for board meetings and such.

I'm in love with Better World Books!

Hi there CKI-

Well if you are friends with me on Facebook you would know after a few pretty down in the dumpsters status updates that I have been sick this past weekend. Everything from clogged ears, runny nose, dry eyes has hit me and it's been a total bummer.

I started my day off reluctantly going to class because even though I am sick I really do like my Human Communication course material and professor. I then strolled over to my campus market to pick up a few cans of soup and lastly went to my campus mailroom to check my mailbox and surprise there was a box there for me! I received my order from Better World Books today of some last minute books I had to grab for my history of theatre class and some favorites that I have been trying to find time to read.

The best part about my day is that when I opened my box of books there was a bar of chocolate in my order! I was kind of confused at first wondering if it got dropped in there by accident or if someone from the Better World Books warehouse had a crush on me because I order from there so often but after reading a cute postcard it was a sweet Valentine's Day treat from BWB. Seriously, they are one of the most extraordinary companies I have ever worked with and I'm super glad they are a CKI partner. I uploaded a picture above so you can see what the postcard says but I will admit I took a few bites out of my chocolate first. :)

Dues Structure Changes

Greetings from CKI:

The Kiwanis International board has approved the finance amendment that was proposed at the House of Delegates this summer in Denver. That amendment allows CKI to move from an individual dues structure to an annual club fee. This amendment has been outlined below. Please note that this new club fee process will not take place until the fall of 2010. Having a year and a half window will allow our International board and districts to determine next steps, and discuss implications of this new process including how to best collect district dues. It will also allow the member service staff here at the office an opportunity to work out the new collection system.

Here is the amendment as passed:

ARTICLE 21. REVENUE

Section 1. International Dues. Each Circle K club shall submit to Circle K International, or its designated fiscal agent, an annual club fee, and membership information for every member, but not including honorary members. All clubs are encouraged to send all fees via traceable means, i.e. certified mail. Clubs must submit payment by check, money order or credit card; cash will not be accepted. A club roster or fees invoice must be submitted at time of payment. Clubs that fail to follow the guidelines for club fee payments will be placed into a special handling group that will delay the processing of fees.

· Each CKI club in a nation with a per capita gross national income of US $10,000 and from a 4 year institution with an enrollment of over 1,000 students shall pay an annual fee of US $600.

· Each CKI club from a nation with a per capita gross national income of US $10,000 and from a 2-4 year institution or a 4 year institution with an enrollment of less than 1,000 students shall pay an annual fee of US $450.

· Each club of a Circle K club in a nation with a per capita gross national income of less than US$ 10,000 shall pay dues of US$300.

All club fees shall be payable during a period of at least sixty (60) days according to a schedule set forth in Circle K International Policies and defined for each nation taking into account academic calendar and financial practices of the nation. There shall be no other fees or assessments of clubs.

Section 2. Each Circle K club that is a member of a Circle K district shall pay Circle K International, or its designated fiscal agent, annual district dues or fees defined within the district’s bylaws and not exceeding the Circle K International club fee, for every member and/or club, but not including honorary members. Dues of fees shall be payable during the same period set forth for payment of the Circle K International club fees and as defined in Section 1 of this Article. There shall be no other district fees or assessments of clubs by Circle K International.

We will be discussing this together over the next several months, so stay tuned for information. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask!

Sunday Afternoon Update

Greetings CKI!

Well, I am home from Chicago and I am proud to say your International Board had a very successful work weekend and made the most out of our time together. In addition, hats off to the Illinois-Eastern Iowa District for putting on a phenomenal fundraiser for Spastic Paralysis.

I wish I was writing you with greetings from Indianapolis right now however due to bad weather storms and Lake Effect snow in New York myself and Key Club International Trustee Jessica Morris had no choice but to be stuck here on the ground and unable to fly in this weekend. We both were scheduled to fly out of Syracuse and speak to the Kiwanis International Foundation about our respective organizations so it was a huge bummer when we both had to cancel. With that being said, the CKI Board will be combining our board meeting with the Kiwanis International Board in April so we should spend some much needed K-Family bonding there in the beginning of spring.

On a personal note, I start classes tomorrow (wahoo!) and I've been packing all day to return back to school. I started off my morning by venturing over the border to Brockville, Ontario CANADA and used one of my Hannukah gift cards for a massage at my favorite spa. It was totally needed! I realized that every month I don't use the gift card that they deduct $5 (lame!) so I redeemed it for a nice stress reliever. The rest of my afternoon will probably be spent packing, making chili with my dad, shopping for school, and then watching the Steeler's game (let's go Pittsburgh!) After my final Sunday afternoon at home I will eventually venture back to Potsdam to start off the Spring 2009 semester with a monday morning class on Human Communication.

Thanks for reading my blog and as soon as I get some free time myself and VP Ricardo will be working on a synopsis highlight of all the occurrences that happened at our board meeting in Chicago. If you have any questions feel free to e-mail your International Representative, VP Ricardo, or myself.

Prez Picks 2008 CKI Awards

Greetings CKI!

So with only a little over a week left to the year 2008 I have been taking time recently to reflect on our CKI year since August. Without a doubt I can say that I have never been prouder of CKI.

The best part of my job being International President has been receiving the e-mails from District Governors and Club Presidents giving me updates on how things are going in their club. Whether it’s a short e-mail to ask me for ideas for recruitment or a long email to tell me how a recent fundraiser or service project has gone I have absolutely enjoyed reading and getting feedback on all of the excellent things our organization has done.

Because of all of the excellent communication this blog post is dedicated to those who have done excellent service and I hope you enjoy my “Prez Picks 2008 CKI Awards.” These acknowledgments aren’t based on any International approved criteria or any special requirements. They are simply my notes on what I have seen cross my desk as the best in service, leadership, and fellowship since I have been elected in August and what better way to thank everyone for being so fabulous then my blog?

Outstanding Service to Service Partner – STUFH
Arizona State University CKI
ASU surely does know how to put the FUN in funky fun service. CKI’s recent partnership with Students Team Up to Fight Hunger has fostered local food drives as the key to making an impact globally. ASU CKI held a really neat service project collecting canned goods for the St. Mary’s Food Bank this semester and the innovative idea of creating a “Castle of Cans” gained a lot of attention and in return helped collect many, many cans for the Food Bank. Congrats to Club President Amanda Badali and all of ASU CKI for an excellent project.

Outstanding Service to Service Partner – March of Dimes
University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh CKI
Sometimes it can be difficult to fundraise for causes all of the time especially since we are broke college students. The UW-Oshkosh club did an excellent project during Prematurity Awareness month making Thanksgiving decorations for their local Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. It was a fantastic and easy way to help out our service partner without having to fundraise or burn too much cash. The turkey decorations were adorable and definitely appreciated by all. Congrats to Club President Lyssa Bergstrom for such a sweet and heart felt project this November!

Capital District CRABS
Since the launch of http://www.unicefusa.org/sixcentsonline many teams have been competing for the top spot as the #1 fundraising team for the Six Cents team. The Capital District CRABS have been pinching their way to success by making every last penny count. With their current donation reaching well over $1000.00 we surely do appreciate all of the fundraisers and fund solicitation they do to help save lives, $0.06 at a time.

To date, the University of Manitoba Circle K has shipped out over 200 boxes of books to help improve education out in Africa, with another shipment of 125 boxes collected over the summer to be sent out later this week as a part of the Books for Africa Program with Better World Books!

Sarah Smith, University of Delaware CKI

Sarah is an awesome example of continuous service in the Kiwanis Family. After her year as Governor of the Capital District of CKI Sarah decided to not let the fun stop there and has been serving CKI and the world through the U of Delaware CKI club. It’s true what they say that once you’re in the Kiwanis family you are always in the Kiwanis family.

Jeremy Missuk, Washington University in St. Louis CKI

Jeremy served Key Club International as District Governor of the New Jersey District back in 2005-2006. Although he may have moved from New Jersey to Missouri he didn’t leave his love to serve at home. Jeremy is currently serving as the very hard working Club President for Wash U in St. Louis’ CKI club and continuous to publicize the “K-Fam” and CKI on his campus.

Imran is a past Key Club Lt. Governor from NY and ever since this summer he has done nothing but non-stop work for the NY District of CKI. His outstanding enthusiasm and hard work ethic is something he brought with him from Key Club and he continues to impress me by serving on one of our CKI Ad-hoc Committees and as a NYCKI District Chair. Thanks for all of your hard work and dedication Imran – it doesn’t go unnoticed, that’s for sure!

I love Lt. Governors. I served as an LTG myself in Key Club but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with all of our Lt. Governors in CKI and especially Michelle Clemens. Whenever Michelle signs online to Google’s GChat she gives me updates on the projects that the Erie Division is up to in Pennsylvania. Whether it’s offering me the opportunity to write an article for her publication or give her recruitment and retention advice I have loved Michelle’s up beat attitude and grace that she has whenever she has tackling any task for CKI.

Minerva is serving this year as President of Duke University’s CKI. I always hear updates via Facebook from Minerva on nifty projects that Duke is up to. Minerva is one of those club presidents that an IP loves to work with simply because she always takes the time out of her schedule to give me a heads up on their latest and greatest strides towards changing the world.

This project created a sensory room for developmentally impaired residents. With help from 4 chapters in her division and donations from Kiwanis Clubs in multiple divisions, Brittany Davis, Hill Country Lt. Governor of the Texas-Oklahoma District planned this extraordinary project that is simple service but leaving a serious impact to children in her community. Great project Brittany!

This project was an overnight event held at the University which held true to the fellowship aspects as well as the service and leadership. Many service projects were "going green" and there was even an ice breaker relay race. Steph Young and Justin Aaron should be commended for doing such a fantastic job organizing a service event with so many bonding experiences available as well. Thanks Steph and Justin for bringing service to Pittsburgh!

Camp Wawbeek Clean Up
This project was organized by Sarah Rihn as a part of the Wisconsin-Upper Michigan District’s Membership Awareness Conference. This project winterized the camp by chopping wood, painting, and cleaning. The CKI members in attendance truly had a fantastic time and between the beautiful fall sunny weather, hard work ethic of enthusiastic CKI members, and work to be done it was the perfect atmosphere for a great afternoon of service.

The University of Tampa has continued this semester a "FreeRice.com" campaign. Members are promoting the website, which donates grains of rice to alleviate hunger for each correct answer in grammar, foreign language, arts, or chemistry, all around campus as well as holding projects where everyone brings a laptop and "freerices" together! Keep up the amazing work Tampa!

Boo in the Zoo
The Purdue University CKI Club put on this year their annual Boo in the Zoo. The club attends a couple days before Halloween and sets up a bunch of "haunted" stations, and then attend Halloween night and dressed up in different costumes. It was an excellent project to bring the haunted zoo to life and congratulations to President Ray for such an excellent project by the Purdue U CKI Club!

Family Christmas Party
The Concord University CKI Club held a Family Christmas Party with many families in attendance as well as selling their CKI Cookbook. Some of the children from the daycare center put reindeer atlers on and presented a program of Christmas songs as well as a gift auction, cookie tray sale, and special visit from Santa occured. All of the fundraiser sales are going to help build a new playground for the campus daycare center. Great job to Ashleigh Glass and the whole Concord University CKI Club for a holiday sweet treat for your campus and families!

The University of Michigan Circle K Club put together a total Serve-a-thon for the Fall 2008 semester! Projects during the 24 hours included Kiwanis Rummage Sale, Ronald McDonald Dinner Preparation, Hospital Dolls, Bottle Drive for Habitat for Humanity, Card Making for Hugs for Hope, Mitten Making, and much much more. The CNH District has made a promise to CKI to raise $10,000 for the Six Cents Initiative before the year is over. Not only is this a remarkable amount of money but the commitment that this district has made to bring safe drinking water to children around the world is very inspiring. Whether it has been through poker tournaments or singing for donations at International Convention this district is motivated and driven to do their part and has already raised over $6,000 for the Six Cents Initiative with UNICEF.

This Circle K Club is known on campus for putting on the most fun event all spring at Elmira College! The Circle K Olympics includes silly field games such as dipping a leg in Vaseline to see how many cotton balls one can collect, wheel chair raises, shaving a balloon, and much much more. This annual project raises funds for a local cause and this year the club donated their profits to the ARC in Elmira. Congrats to Elmira for putting on a fun in the sun day for your campus while helping out others!

Honestly, Kasey is one of the biggest reasons why I always boast about how well the Kiwanis International Office supports CKI. She has served formerly as our CKI Magazine Editor and although she has moved on to a new position within Kiwanis International she has continued to support CKI every chance she gets. Whether it was in May when we first spent 12 hours together drafting and brainstorming the new CKI Web-site or the hours she spends outside of the office posting news headlines, tip me sections, and new polls Kasey always supports and dedicates time to CKI. We’ve joked from time to time that she has “neglected her three little boys to help Kristen slave over the CKI site” but without her creative nature and fun to work with personality I don’t know how the web stuff would have gotten completed. Thanks for all you do Kasey, it means the world to me!

Being District Administrator to the Capital Crabs is no small task. Jeff is constantly fostering leadership skills and being a great advisor to the CDCKI Board while also serving as Lt. Governor to Division 20 of the Capital District. He is one of my favorite Kiwanians in all of Kiwanis and always inspires me to not only be a better president but is personal and a fantastic advocate for CDCKI in the Capital District of Kiwanis. At the 2008 Capital District DCON Jeff even had the Club Achievement Award named in his honor. Thanks Jeff for all you – you’re truly a role model for what a Kiwanian should be!

District Editor Jessica Burkemper can put together one rockin’ publication! The T-O Today is one of those newsletters that I look forward to receiving a copy of in my inbox. Editor Jessica’s eye for layout, content, colors, and CKI graphics is so impressive and truly a talent. I know her publication is a remarkable resource for Texas-Oklahoma and many props go out to Jessica for one of the prettiest publications I have seen all year.

The Ace is the publication by the University of Nevada Las Vegas Club. The Ace contains the weekly agenda, calendar, and service project highlights for the club. I remember seeing this publication when I was judging the outstanding newsletter award last year at ICON Denver in August. Although the UNLV has much to be proud of including their incredible web-site their newsletter is an excellent resource and publication to it’s member. Mad Props UNLV! Keep up the awesome work!

I hear nothing but praise about Zac’s dedication to the Kiwanis family and promoting relations between Key Club and Circle K. Have you ever tried chartering a district? Monica has! Monica Van Den Hurk spends her days as an active member of the Carleton University CKI club outside of Ottawa, Ontario Canada. I have been working side by side with her, Representative Hotchkiss, and Representative Geiger to get Eastern Canada chartered as their own district this year. Monica’s passion stems from her past involvement as a Key Club Lt. Governor and she puts the same heart into everything she does with EC. It’s not easy working with a district that speaks both French and English but I am very proud of the inspiration she has instilled in her members and all of her hard work towards compiling a nice profile for her Kiwanis district to review on Eastern Canada.

In addition to a plethora of downloadables there is a nifty Podcast for members to take a listen to on their visit to the site. Great division site T.J. – keep up the good work!

Their CKI promotional video on the front page is a nice addition as well as the minutes posted for those who are interested in what the club is up to. My puppy Buster :)
Many of you may find this dorky but my new puppy has been my biggest stress reliever this semester. He is only 4 months old and every time I’ve needed a break I’ve come home to walk him or play Frisbee. With the new snow and winter weather he is now fully equipped with a jacket, boots, reindeer antlers, and Santa hat (I promise to upload pictures at a later date.) If I could bring him to International Board Meetings with me I surely would because he is the cutest thing on the planet. Lastly, he is named after my favorite NFL Player of all time Jerome Bettis of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Woot Woot! =)

Greetings CKI!

I thought everyone would be interested in checking out a screen shot of what my desktop says it is outside. Feel free to click the image above on the right and see what the lower right hand yellow box says, it's a very chilly ZERO degrees here in New York.

Today I had an excellent conference call with the Wisconsin-Upper Michigan District Board. Congratulations to them for a very successful board meeting and deciding to have it on the phone rather then people driving through dangerous conditions. It's always important to make sure that we are staying safe this holiday/winter season with our travels.

If you are looking for a fun way to get your club involved although when there is very chilly weather I highly recommend having social nights in where your members can enjoy hot chocolate, cookie making, gift wrapping, watching movies, playing board games, or maybe even having a mystery gift swap. You can also try fun activities like ice skating socials or hockey game socials. Above is a picture of myself and my friend Brittany at a hockey game, clearly I went all out to support my Potsdam Bears by painting a bear paw on my cheek! haha! It's always nice to plan fellowship activities not just because it is cold but also because it's a nice opportunity to give members a stress reliever from studying for final exams, we all know how stressful the end of the semester can get!

So thanks for reading my update and keep your eyes peeled for the CKI Board Book being released soon!

Dear Kiwanians,

The devastating Southern California fires have destroyed thousands of homes and forced tens of thousands of residents to be evacuated from their homes, schools and communities. Now that most of the fires have been contained, the children and families who've been impacted begin the unimaginable process of starting over. For so many people, the long road to recovery starts now, and that's where you can make a difference.

Many of you have already contacted us to inquire how you can help the victims of the Southern California Fires. We are encouraging all Kiwanians to support the Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation's Disaster Relief Fund. This fund will provide critical support for children and families affected by the fires. The Foundation, working through the Lt. Governor or appointed contact person within the affected areas, will ensure your contributions are directed to those with the most immediate and critical needs, such as:

purchasing gasoline, which will be used for generators to provide emergency power
providing shovels, rakes, boots, gloves and sifters, etc., to clear debris
helping to repair fire-damaged areas
replacing essential items such as clothing, toiletry and household items to families devastated by the fires
delivering perishable and non-perishable food to families affected by the fires

We ask that you send your contribution to the Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation Disaster Relief Fund, 8360 Red Oak Street, Suite 201, Rancho Cucamonga, CA 91730. Please indicate on your check or in an attached note that your donation is for the Southern California Fires.

CKI Club helps out Extreme Home Makeover

Lyssa's CKI club was lucky enough to have the fantastic opportunity to work with Extreme Home Makeover on a very unique service project and I asked her to be a guest writer for my blog to give you some insight on this SUPER cool project. University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Ty Pennington Style
Its 3am and I'm warming up my car, as Meggie DeWild my lieutenant governor drives up and hops in. One would think why in the world are you up at 3am? We have one for you Service. We where traveling to Richland Center, Wisconsin to help a family of 5, that's right we where heading to Extreme Home Makeover: Home Edition. We were not only motivated by the service we would be doing but to see the handsome face of Mr. Ty Pennington. Our long early 4 hour drive included many detours and picking up my secretary, Melissa Winchell, along the way. We traveled across the state which led us to this fabulous city, full of volunteers and workers from all over! It was the race against time, to finish a project that would ordinarily take a company at least four months to achieve. Here we where helping in the cause to finish this project in less than a week! Several hundred volunteers passed through the rolling Wisconsin countryside to help this family. We helped out with many tasks, and where split up: we landscaped, we handed out hardhats, and one of us was put in charge of all the volunteers, yey Leadership! No matter what volunteer project we did, we where happy to be there to serve. Just knowing that this family would be forever changed by us made our adrenalin driven bodies withstand the 99.8 degree weather for 5 hours. This one small service project changed my views on many things, showing there are so many people out that care about others, and our willing to make a change.

I am very excited to announce that the Governors of Sub-region D met this evening and elected Tiffany Hansen from the Wayne State College Circle K Club in the Nebraska-Iowa District as their International Representative. Tiffany will also be serving on the Membership Development and Benefits Committee.

Tiffany is a junior International Business and Communication student and has served as a Lt. Governor for the past two years. In addition, she is a graduate of the CKI LeaderShape Institute. A few fun facts about Tiffany include that her favorite color is red, favorite food is prime rib, and she loves the store Target!

CKI members are challenging one another to raise money for the Six Cents Initiative.

Are you game?

If so, check out the UNICEF Six Cents Initiative page to form a team, join an existing one, or sign up as an individual participant. All money raised will help provide clean drinking water to children all over the world. The link to sign up: http://www.unicefusa.org/sixcentsonline

CKI’s Six Cents Initiative with UNICEF is designed to help children get the rehydrating salts they need to survive dehydration spells. But that’s not all. With the money raised, UNICEF also is working to provide long-term solutions for the problem, which includes providing clean water resources through the installation of filtration and sanitation systems. Water filters installed in schools and communal areas can benefit entire communities. Ultimately, the goal is to educate individuals on safe water and hygiene practices, and to provide supplies to produce safe water supplies for communities.

The CKI dues paid member that fundraises the most money on Six Cents Online will receive a FREE International Convention Registration for Birmingham, Alabama 2009!

The goal is to raise more than US$32,025 for the Six Cents Initiative by the end of the 2009 CKI convention. Why $32,025? Because that symbolizes every club raising $61 to buy a family in need a water filter.

Silly Buster!

UNICEF Tips for Winter Weather

Many of us in the North East have been hit with some interesting patterns of winter weather storms today. With Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF quickly approaching I wanted to stop by and give clubs a few alternative ways to collect money for UNICEF if your plans to go door to door are canceled because of snow.

Thanks for taking the time to read and please feel free to e-mail me at president@circlek.org if you are looking for anymore tips or ideas.

10 ways to fundraise for UNICEF with Winter Weather:

Bring your UNICEF box to class and ask for your classmates and professors to donate spare change.
Walk around your Student Union or Dining Court to ask for donations.
Get permission from your Residence Life staff to Trick-or-Treat in the Residence Halls.
Plan a dance with your college radio station and ask for donations to UNICEF at the door.
Work with Haunted House coordinators in your area to set up tables inside at the end of their Haunted Houses to ask for donations.
Coordinate a table at your local grocery store to ask for donations.
Sell bundles of Hershey Kisses in your student union to be delivered to students on Halloween.
Contact local Elementary Schools and ask them if you can write an article for their school bulletin to ask for donations and explain what UNICEF is.
Write a letter to other organizations on campus to ask them to collect happy change for you.
Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF in the snow but sing holiday carols (Let it Snow, Walking in a Winter Wonderland, etc...) for donations. Remember to bundle up!

I have been resting all day catching up on some sleep and enjoying my day off of classes for the American holiday of Columbus Day. This weekend I ventured to beautiful Wisconsin for the Wisconsin-Upper Michigan District's Membership Awareness Conference and I'm happy to say I had a phenomenal time. Happy Double Ten Day!

Greetings CKI!

I am currently at my parent's house just starting my fall break but I'll be leaving tomorrow to go to the Wisconsin-Upper Michigan District's Fall Membership Awareness Conference, to say I'm excited would be an understatement.

Before I venture off to Wisconsin in the morning I wanted to be sure to wish all of our Taiwanese members a Happy Double Ten Day! For those of you who are not familiar with Double Ten Day it is a celebration of the start of the Wunchang Uprising of October 10th, 1911. This led to the fall of the Qing Dynasty of China and later to the establishment of China as a Republic on January 1st, 1912.

Keep up the excellent fall service, leadership, and fellowship everyone and I'll be sure to write everyone to let you know how my trip this weekend goes. If your lucky you may just get a video, we'll see!

Good News Jar - Try it out at your next club meeting!

Greetings CKI!

Matthew Schuweiler, Circle K MN-DAK District Governor, mentioned a really cool fundraising concept the other day when I was referencing his Governor's Report Form. Matt mentioned the idea of a "Good News Jar" for clubs to try out at their meetings. When I asked Matt for more details he let me know that "The good news jar is a "jar" that you pass around at the beginning of each meeting. People put change in the jar and talk about good things that happened to them that week, or if the club meets bi-weekly since the last meeting. It can be anything from getting a good grade or going on a "hot date."

Simple fundraiser, Serious impact, eh? =)
